Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over

Officers from the Delran Township Police Department will be cracking down on drivers impaired by alcohol or drugs as part of the annual end of year “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” statewide campaign.

Beginning December 9, 2016 and continuing through January 1, 2017, local and state law enforcement officials will conduct saturation patrols and sobriety checkpoints looking for motorists who may be driving while intoxicated.

The national “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” effort endeavors to raise awareness about the dangers of impaired driving through a combination of high-visibility enforcement and public education. During the last five years, New Jersey has experienced approximately 41,000 alcohol involved crashes resulting in more than 800 fatalities. This is a critical law enforcement program that can save lives during a time of the year when impaired driving traditionally increases by nearly 10 percent.

Last year, 29% of all motor vehicle fatalities in New Jersey were alcohol-related. Nationally, more than 10,000 people die each year in drunk driving crashes. The societal cost associated with these crashes is estimated to be $37 billion annually.

The Delran Township Police Department offers the following advice for the holiday season:

• Take mass transit, a taxicab, or ask a sober friend to drive you home.
• Spend the night where the activity or party is held.
• If you see an impaired driver on the road, contact law enforcement. Your actions may save someone’s life, and inaction could cost a life.
• Always buckle-up, every ride. It’s your best defense against an impaired driver.
• If you are intoxicated and traveling on foot, the safest way to get home is to take a cab or have a sober friend or family member drive or escort you to your doorstep.
• Be responsible. If someone you know is drinking, do not let that person get behind the wheel.

"Always Wear Your Helmet and Ride with Friends"

Nate, Brandon, Andrew, Tyler, Noah, Dylan

The Delran Police started an initiative a few months ago where we have been stopping kids for doing the right thing and giving them a free ice cream, pizza slices, or other items. We have found many kids doing the right thing this summer most of them were caught wearing their bicycle helmet and their pictures have been place on our social media page.

We recently found out about an incident that happened in town where one of our young residents was riding his bicycle and after taking his hands off the handle bars (which he stated he learned a valuable lesson about keeping both hands on the handle bars) fell to the ground and was initially not responsive. Brandon was very fortunate that he was wearing his helmet and from the attached photographs you can see that he was banged up including broken bones and many bruises. After his mother and father took Brandon to see several doctors they all stated that if he was not wearing his helmet at the time of the crash he probably would have sustained a very serious head injury.

Detective Irons and Lt. Williams met with all the kids that were with Brandon at the time of the crash with the exception of Mason who was not available. We learned that one of the youngest in the group Dylan grabbed Brandon's phone and called Brandon's mother to get help. Some of the other kids like Tyler ran to neighbors houses to get someone to call 911 for help. These actions allowed for a quick response to take care of Brandon. We applaud all the kids for doing the right thing! (They all stated that they were wearing their helmets on this day also) All the kids were given tickets for ice cream, pizza and boost. They surely deserve it for how they acted to help a friend in need.

We hope this story will remind kids and parents alike to wear their helmet whenever they go for a bike ride, who knows it could save your life. After speaking with Brandon's parents and hearing how scared they were to get the news of their son lying on the ground injured and all the thoughts running through their heads while they were trying to get to him puts the importance of helmets and good friends at the top of the list. Without the helmet and the quick thinking of Brandon's friends this day could have lived up to the thoughts in his parent’s heads. Thankfully Brandon is doing well and should be back to riding his bike (with both hands) in a few months.

Thank you for sharing your story with us and get will soon!

Body Cameras Coming to Delran Police

The Delran Township Police Department will soon be implementing body cameras to its already advanced remote camera technology to ensure a transparent police department.

In addition to our in-car video cameras in every front line patrol vehicle, the Delran Police Department will be equipping each patrol officer with a Body Worn Camera System.

The Delran Township Police Department has always been progressive when it comes to camera technology. We were the first department in the County and maybe even the State to introduce the in-car camera system which at the time was cutting edge "Beta-Formatted" technology. We soon progressed to a VHS video system that was purchased from Mobile Vision. This technology has also been upgraded over the years to a wireless downloadable format which was also provided by Mobile Vision which is now L-3 Mobile Vision, Inc.

The Body Worn Camera technology will enhance our officer safety, reduce liability, assist with prosecution and case resolution, and further promote professionalism and accountability.

The Body Vision XV body camera is a rugged, reliable on-officer camera, designed for simple use and top performance. A 110-degree field of view, multiple on-body mounting options, along with a single button that allows for digital recording of evidence. The video will be transferred to  our on-site, server-based system that is secure from outside tampering and will be able to grow with our agencies needs. The end-user cannot tamper with the video stored on the server or with the Body Vision XV video camera. The body cam maintains chain-of-custody integrity with digitally signed video data. The camera records up to a 90-second loop, so when an officer activates the device while interacting with the public, images of what occurred immediately prior to the contact will be available.

In 2015, the Delran Police investigated more than 23,651 patrol activities including calls for service and motor vehicle stops. In our current society almost every citizen has a video capable smart-phone and it's imperative that we capture events from the beginning of our police encounter until the end. The cameras will play a large part in reducing litigation while increasing officer efficiency. The cameras will protect our agency from frivolous allegations and allow us to capture the events in real-time as they unfold and prevent expensive and time-consuming lawsuits.

The Body Worn Camera System cost approximately $27,000.00 for 30 officers. The money was acquired through a 5-year capital improvement plan and a grant through the N.J. Attorney General's Office which paid for approximately $14,000.00 dollars of the cost of the cameras.
